Highlands signs

March 25, 2014 By paulie 22 Comments

Most of the great lines at Aspen Highlands aren’t on the map. No, they’re little signs on trees.

So I have this thang, where I try to find all the little signs on trees. And, I don’t just take a picture — that’s cheating. I ski the line where the sign is.

Some of the lines where signs are (particularly on the Thunder Bowl side) aren’t skiable unless there’s lots of snow or the snow is soft. They’re too steep and rocky — no sign is worth getting hurt (or worse) for.

This is my first year looking for signs. There’s been a lot of snow, so I’ve been able to find a lot of signs.

If you go to Highlands and you find a new sign not here, give me a clue so I can go look for it!

Here’s what I’ve found so far.

I came back to Highlands yesterday after a 3 year hiatus. I dunno, the whole Aspen thing got to me. I had some terrible chairlift rides with some world class douchebags. It got to me. So I said fuck it. But over time, I started missing the turns. Plus my best friend Jonesy is there. I have some friends there. I went back yesterday. It all felt so right. So I’m back. I’ll be back next Saturday. Next year I’ll renew my 7 day pass, which is now a valley pass? I live in Eagle, but I can still buy it.

Highlands is in my blood. It’s great to be back. And I have some new ideas for the signs!

There’s some weird wooden sign on the split on Kessler that is wood colored and has a white A.

The Deception tree has a sign on it. Pretty sure I don’t need to explain where this tree is or which tree I mean. Ski it, you will see it. This sign doesn’t mark a trail. It commemorate someone or something. It seems like there is a story behind it. Hoping you can find it out for me.
