The first party. I had made it 1 year clean and sober and I threw a party to celebrate. I’ve accomplished some stuff. But this, was unbelievable. I did, what I thought I could never do.
I remember when I announced the party at the meetings in the valley, the looks I got when I told everyone the party was on the Beach at the Basin. Everyone looked at me like, “you’re having a party to celebrate being clean and sober in the midst of a bunch of people drinking and carrying on? Say what?”. Of course that didn’t even cross my mind. All I knew is that I had made it 1 year and I wanted to celebrate. And what better place to do it — on the Beach, at the Basin.
Here’s what sticks out when I watch the video and look at the pics:
My sobriety date is 4.16.2007. Once I knew I was going to make it, I think it was February, I came up with the idea to have a party on the Beach. I called the Basin to see if there were any Beach spots left. All the Beach spots were sold out for the rest of the year except for two on 4.12. I celebrated 4 days early and broke my now infamous “no fronts!” saying.
Friends that once were but aren’t now.
My boy is still in his stroller.
It was freaking cold that day. It was well below zero when we started in the morning.
How much snow there was. The past few years there hasn’t been near that much snow. No, global warming isn’t real.

I still remember that day – S.O.B. 1 was a ton of fun!
I hope to make it to another one of these years. It will happen, my friend, it will.

Hello my friend.
You had longer hair, it was dark.
I had dark hair, more of it.
C’est la vie!
This years party is Saturday May 7.
We’ve got the apartment setup now, c’mon out and stay for a few days. We’d love to have you.
If I don’t see you this winter, I’ll see you in D.C., here:
